Jay Peters
I'm a dedicated problem solver that's spent over a decade in software in a number of engineering positions, for growing and global companies. The last 11 years have been a constant journey of education, and now I'm excited to embrace a new season of building, where I can share my knowledge and impart my experience with others through content and coaching, and continue my passion for learning on a new entrepreneurial adventure, building tools and creating value for others.
Work History
Software Engineer
Omeda was my first full-time position as a software engineering professional. Great leaders and mentors influenced my growth from college grad to full-stack developer, building web pages from scratch using Java, JSP, jQuery, Hibernate, and SQL. After nearly 3 years, and a slow start, I was Web Team lead and Scrum Master Certified.
Software Engineer
At Orchard, I had a chance to explore JavaFX and desktop development which was surprisingly different from the web development I was used to at the time, but it was a valuable change of pace. Working there also offered the additional challenge of jumping into a completely different field of medical device interfaces.
Software Engineer II
NextGear gave me the opportunity to develop 2 years of learning Salesforce's Service Cloud and adapt to considerably more complicated distributed systems, building Lightning pages integrated with Java microservices and the Netflix Eureka library.
Manager, Software Engineering
I'm incredibly grateful for the 4 years I spent at Salesforce. I started as a platform developer, became a team lead, then Senior Member Technical Staff, and ended as a Manager for multiple teams in the Customer Success space, leading the planning and development of tools to help both employees and customers be successful, including managing releases to public resources like help.salesforce.com
Growth Phases
I've had the unique opportunity to be a part of various stages of business development, starting with a company where I saw the CEO in-office daily, and ending where I would occasionally catch the CEO on TV or a company stream.
Growing
I started at a relatively small company with a technology department of about 20 and 150 total employees, and I wore many hats and had admin access to everything.
Acquired
Eventually I moved on to a company where I sat in an open office of more than 50 tech people, and I had much more focused responsibilities and much less access to systems, but still some admin privileges.
Corporation
Finally, I end up only one of 70,000+ employees, working with team members in multiple countries, and I was never granted admin access to production, but I still wore a few different hats.
What's Next
A New Season
After 11 years in the industry, I came to the realization I was ready for a change. I have some projects in mind, so I'll be balancing those while also documenting and decompiling what I've learned and experienced.
Coaching
I've been lucky enough to lead multiple teams and projects at different companies, and after spending thousands of hours in calls and meetings, I've found I'm good at listening and understanding what people are really saying. I can bridge the gap between tech and non-tech talk.
I've had the fortune of working with great leaders that helped me in my career growth. So now it's time for me to use my strengths to help you with yours.
Want to chat?
Looking for guidance in your engineering career? Let's talk! Honestly, it can be about anything, whether it's pushing for a promotion, worrying about a deadline, a manager that isn't listening, an annoying co-worker, a new language or framework you don't understand, a process that keeps breaking, another unnecessary system you're being forced to implement, or just needing to vent, I'm happy to listen and offer advice where I can.
Since this is the beginning of my coaching path, these calls are free. I want to provide value first. As time becomes more scarce, the price may increase and available time slots may decrease, but for now the cost is 30 minutes.
Looking for Consulting?
I'm happy to offer software consulting for your business. With more than a decade of experience, I've learned a number of ways to operate an engineering department correctly and incorrectly. Let me save you time and money by pointing your business in the right direction, correcting a wrong move, advising with an integration, strategizing a migration, or simplifying a complex system.
